Server CPU Guide
Intel Xeon & AMD EPYC

How server processors are named, packaged and ordered — and how to specify the right part number for an Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC platform.

Xeon vs EPYC,
what differs

Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC are both built for servers, but they sit on different platforms, use different part-number systems and are supplied almost exclusively as tray (OEM) processors. The table below is a starting point; the platform decides the socket, the memory type and the board you need.

PlatformExample socketsMemoryTypical fit
Intel Xeon Scalable / Xeon 6LGA3647 · LGA4189 · LGA4677 · LGA75296–8 channel DDR4/DDR5Enterprise servers, cloud
AMD EPYCSP3 · SP5 · SP66–12 channel DDR4/DDR5Dense compute, HPC, virtualisation
Intel Xeon W / AMD Threadripper PROLGA4677 / sWRX8 · sTR54–8 channel DDR5Workstations, render nodes

Xeon and EPYC
part numbers

Intel Xeon Scalable / Xeon 6. The name combines a tier (Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze) with a four-digit model, e.g. Xeon Gold 6548Y+. The model identifies the generation and SKU; a trailing letter denotes a variant. The processor is quoted by its tray part number (a CM… or PK… code) or by its S-Spec, the five-character code such as SRN3R.

AMD EPYC. The four-digit model marks the series and SKU — 9004 / 9005 for the top socket, 8004 for single-socket, 4004 below that. The processor is quoted by its OPN, a part number such as 100-000000910.

If you only know the model, we confirm the exact tray code for you. Our tray CPU index lists tray part numbers with their S-Spec and boxed equivalents.

Server CPUs are
almost always tray

Unlike desktop chips, server processors are rarely sold in retail boxes — they arrive in tray/OEM packaging for system builders and are warranted through the supplier. The silicon is identical to any boxed equivalent. Read the full boxed vs tray comparison →

Send the part numbers, S-Specs or OPNs you need, with quantities, and we reply with a quotation.

Server CPU FAQ

Are Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC CPUs sold boxed?

Rarely. Server processors are normally supplied as tray (OEM) units, warranted through the supplier. Send the part number and we confirm packaging and availability.

How do I identify an Intel Xeon part number?

Quote the tray part number (CM/PK code) or the five-character S-Spec, e.g. SRN3R. If you only have the model name, we match it to the code.

Which socket does a current-generation server CPU use?

It depends on the platform: Intel Xeon 6 uses LGA7529, EPYC 9004/9005 use SP5, and EPYC 8004 uses SP6. Always confirm against the board you are building.

Do you have a minimum order quantity on server CPUs?

Most server CPU lines carry no minimum order quantity. Where a brand imposes one, we state it on your quotation.

Do you ship server CPUs internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Hong Kong by FedEx, UPS, DHL Express or Aramex, EXW or DAP. See shipping & delivery.

Need Xeon or EPYC pricing?

Send the part numbers and quantities and we will reply with a quotation, usually within 1–2 business days.
